At Zumba, we started doing a few songs with some Flamenco influence. One of the instructors even handed out flyers for a Flamenco concert. I dragged Adrian to the concert, and loved it! Since then, I've started "tuning" my internet radio stations to flamenco. At first they all tended to sound somewhat the same, but now I'm developing favorites. YouTube even has some fairly good videos for these:

Happy Rhodes

Adrian and I were listening to Pandora one night and a song came on which we had never heard "Lay Me Down" by Happy Rhodes from the album Warpaint.

I did a bit of research and according to Wikipedia she has a four octave range, hardly ever tours or is featured on radio (except locally in NY/PA where she is based), and one of her songs When the Rain Came Down was once mistakenly uploaded to Napster as a duet between Annie Lennox and Kate Bush.

As it turns out, Last.fm has many of her tracks available for free (and legal) download. I got everything available for the albums Warpaint and Ecto. My favorite songs at first from Warpaint (I've not gotten around to listening to Ecto much yet) are: Lay Me Down, Murder, Phobos, and Wrong Century. Adrian really liked Lay Me Down, Murder and especially Words Weren't Made for Cowards. Since he liked that one so much I started listening to it more, and now my favorites are Lay Me Down, Murder, Words Weren't Made for Cowards, To Live in Your World, and In Hiding.

Anyway, Happy Rodes: <3 <3 <3

Observers

A sort-of parody song written in 2003. To the tune of "Landslide" by Stevie Nicks:

Observers
Here in the cockpit lookin' round
Looked out the window, then looked down
I saw some guy guess I'll call him S
My observer on the ground

Observer in the sky is what I've become
Called myself S' ...just because
See I heard about this Einstein guy
He claims strange things happen when you fly

So then I started planning
'Cause I wanted to see the effects
You know I've been thinkin'
This plane could be shrinkin'
But I ain't seen nothin' yet

Oh, waved to that guy S on the ground
He's not my twin just a guy I found
And I only wanted to ask him the time
But his watch might need to be wound

Yeah, I only wanted to get the time
But his watch seems to have slowed down

There used to be a physics limericks competition, and I think I was motivated by "Relatively Good Advice." Some of my other favorites were:

Condensed Story of Ms Farad
A Brief History of Gravity
Cole's Lost Soul

Fear: Another Lyrical Essay?

"What do you fear, milady?"
"A cage. To stay behind bars until use and old age accept them and all chance of valor has gone beyond recall or desire."
Aragorn and Eowyn in The Two Towers

I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. - Romans 8:15

"Dear God.... How did I come to this? ...Five curtain calls! I was an ACTOR once, darn it. Now look at me... LOOK AT ME." - Dr. Lazarus, Galaxy Quest

"I'm a codfish!" - Capt. Hook

Nothing really matters
Anyone can see
Nothing really matters
Nothing really matters to me
- Queen, Bohemia Rhapsody

So you live from day to day, and you dream about tomorrow, oh.
And the hours go by like minutes and the shadows come to stay
So you take a little something to make them go away
And I could have done so many things, baby
If I could only stop my mind from wondrin' what
I left behind and from worrying 'bout this wasted time
- Eagles, Wasted Time

I don't know what's right and what's real anymore
And I don't know how I'm meant to feel anymore
And when do you think it will all become clear?
'Cuz I'm being taken over by the Fear
- Lily Allen, The Fear

Lyrics Enjoyed of Late

It should be our time. This fertile youth's black soil is ready for rain.
The harvest is nigh, but the well has gone dry.
- The Lines of My Earth, Sixpence None the Richer

Make the best of what's given you
Everything will come in time
Why deny yourself
Don't just let life just pass you by
Like winter in July
- Winter in July, Sarah Brightman

She's a beautiful girl
And everything around her is a silver pool of light
The people who surround her feel the benefit of it
It makes you calm
She holds you captivated in her palm

Suddenly I see (Suddenly I see)
This is what I wanna be
Suddenly I see (Suddenly I see)
Why the hell it means so much to me
- Suddenly I See, KT Tunstall

She comes to me when I'm feelin' down
Inspires me without a sound
She touches me and I get turned around
She's got a way of showin'
How I make her feel
And I find the strength to keep on goin'
She's got a light around her
And ev'rywhere she goes a million
Dreams of love surround her ev'rewhere
- She's Got A Way, Billy Joel

Something in the way she knows,
And all I have to do is think of her.
Something in the things she shows me.
I don't want to leave her now.
You know I believe and how.
- Something, The Beatles

...and I'm thinking of Sarah Smith, from The Great Divorce.

I'm so vain,
I probably think this song is about me.
Don't I, don't I!
- Rachel and my version of You're So Vain by Carly Simon

She's come undone.
She She didn't know what she was headed for,
And when she found what she was headed for,
It was too late!

It's too late
She's gone too far
She's lost the sun.
She's come undoooone!
- Undun, The Guess Who

She comes out of the sun with a silk dress running
Like a water color, in the rain.
The Year of the Cat, Al Stewart

Greeen Eyed Lady, lovely lady
Strolling slowly towards the sun
Green eyed lady ocean lady
child of nature, friend of man
Green eyed lady passions lady
dressed in love she lives for life to be
- Green Eyed Lady, Sugarloaf

Midnight, on the water.
I saw, the ocean's daughter.
Walking on a wave she came, staring as she called my name.
And I can't get it out of my head.
No I can't get it out of my head.
Now my whole world is gone for dead.
'Cause I can't get it out of my head, no no, no no.
- Can't Get It Out Of My Head, Electric Light Orchestra

'We War Der Thor, Wer Weiser, Wer Bettler Oder, Kaiser?'

'Ob Arm, Ob Beich, im Tode gleich.'

'The wise have eyes in their heads,
while the fool walks in the darkness;
but I came to realize
that the same fate overtakes them both.' (Eccl. 2:14)

The Conductor's Apprentice

Back when I was a kid in Tulsa, I remember the Tulsa Zoo used to have symphony days. Most homeschoolers are big on field trips, so we would always go to these whenever they were held. Anyway, there would always be a point during the presentation when the conductor would let a kid come up and pretend to conduct. I always wanted to be that kid! So, I think sometimes when I was listening to music at home I would "practice" hoping that I'd get better than all the other kids at "pretend conducting," and somehow the conductor would know and pick me!

Anyway, he never did. But I enjoyed "pretend conducting" at home, anyway. When I was in my mid-teens. I fell in love with Star Wars (because that is, more-or-less, when I saw it for the first time), including the music. For Christmas or one of my birthdays, I got the special edition soundtracks. Since I didn't have the movies, the next best thing was to spend hours listening to the music. Which, of course, I conducted from the privacy of my own room. My favorite to conduct is The Imperial March! Try repeatedly conducting that for hours on end... that'll work out your tricepts and bicepts!

Lyric Segments Enjoyed of Late

I remember when, I remember
I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions have an echo in so much space

And when you're out there, out there
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much

Does that make me crazy?
Crazy, Gnarls Barkley

Hey you with the pretty face
Welcome to the human race! Hey-ay-ay.
A celebration, mister blue sky's up there waitin'
And today is the day we've waited for

Mister blue sky please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Mr. Blue Sky, Electric Light Orchestra

Tonight it's time/Choose a direction
If you fail/You can make a correction
Slower now/Make life faster
Make your mind/Up for once this time
It's hard,to know/Where I'm, supposed to go
It's so hard,to know/Where I'm, supposed to go
Tonight, Tonight
Tonight, Sixpence None The Richer

As the pain sweeps through/Makes no sense for you
Every thrill is gone/Wasn't too much fun at all
[...] As the world falls down/falling/falling
As the World Falls Down, David Bowie

You never give me your money
You only give me your funny paper
and in the middle of negotiations
you break down

I never give you my number
I only give you my situation
and in the middle of investigation
I break down
You Never Give Me Your Money, Beatles

I don't care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice when I'm not around
You're so very special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here

She's running out again
She's running out
She runs runs runs
Creep, Radiohead

I've got a ticket to the moon
I'll be leaving here any day soon
Yeah, I've got a ticket to the moon
But I'd rather see the sunrise in your eyes.

Got a ticket to the moon
I'll be rising high above the earth so soon
And the tears I cry might turn into the rain
That gently falls upon your window
You'll never know.
Ticket to the Moon, ELO

My Medley

I decided to record myself singing a few of my favorite songs. The recorder I was using timed out at about thirty seconds. So, I just sang a few dozen different ones, and strung the best ones all together. They're all acapella. Also, they're in ogg vorbis; so if your player doesn't support that you made need to download a plugin.

I've since put the medley on YouTube (with pictures of flowers, of course - what else could I use?):

MacArthur Park

Some people think this is a drug song. Some people think it's a love song. Some people think it's about dinosaurs. I prefer to think of it as a love song (or rather, a song about love lost). Still, with the original (non-dinosaur) words, it doesn't really make complete sense either way (which, if it's a drug song, it doesn't really have to make sense); but she has a lovely voice, and the weirdness has a certain beauty, so I like the song :D. I don't particularly care for the disco segues, which musically suggests more to me that it's a drug song. Also "sweet green icing flowing down" suggests hallucinations, I mean, who bakes a cake with green icing??? Well, the lady who made the armadillo groom's cake in Steel Magnolias would probably do it, but who else??? Some people think the words are "sweet CREAM icing" - but that's not the majority opinion. The first Donna Summers song that I learned was "She Works Hard for the Money," which also tends to have a bad reputation as being about "a woman of ill repute." However, in that case, the lyrics really don't support that idea since it says "9am on the hour hand" and "she'll never sell out/she never will/ not for a dollar bill." Poor Donna Summer. Always misunderstood. Of course, being famous for a song called "Bad Girls" probably doesn't help either (but I don't really like that one, and don't know the words either). "Heaven Knows" is another one I do like. Anyway, here's MacArthur park (which wasn't even written by Donna Summer):

Spring was never waiting for us till
it ran one step ahead
as we followed in the dance.

Between the parted pages
we were pressed,
in love's hot, fevered iron
like a striped pair of pants.

Mac Arthur's Park is melting in the dark
all the sweet green icing flowing down
someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'cause it took so long to bake it
and I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, nooo!

I recall the yellow cotton dress
foaming like a wave
on the ground beneath your knees
birds like tender babies in your hands
and the old men playing
Chinese checkers
by the trees

Mac Arthur Park's is melting in the dark
all the sweet green icing flowing down
someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'cause it took so long to bake it
and I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, nooo!

There'll be another song for me
and I will sing it
there'll be another dream for me
someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warn
and never let you catch me
looking at the sun, oh yeah
and after all the loves of my life
after all loves in my life
you'll be the one

I will take my life into my hands
and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes
and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
and my passion flow
like rivers through the sky
oh and after all the loves in my life
after all the loves in my life
you'll still be the one
and I'll ask myself why.

Mac Arthur's Park is melting in the dark
all the sweet green icing flowing down
someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'cause it took so long to bake it
and I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, nooo!

Love Potion No. 9

Here's a song for today:

Love Potion Number Nine

The Clovers, The Searchers

I took my troubles down to Madame Rue
You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth
She's got a pad down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
Sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine
I told her that I was a flop with chics
I've been this way since 1956
She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign
She said "What you need is Love Potion Number Nine"
She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink
She said "I'm gonna make it up right here in the sink"
It smelled like turpentine, it looked like Indian ink
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink
I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine
 ------ guitar solo ------
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink
I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine
 Love Potion Number Nine
 Love Potion Number Nine
 Love Potion Number Nine

Hmmm. Reminds me of my childhood.

But, in the end, Rachel stole the day. By making her own YouTube channel. I feel so left out. And it's all my fault. I'm the only Giles kid without his/her own YouTube performances. Which I guess makes sense. 'Cause I'm not even a Giles anymore. *sniff sniff*

My Debut

I went over to my parents house, and into my Dad's basement recording studio, and belted out Black Velvet... or rather, tried to, since the headphone extension cord was broken and I couldn't make it to a standing position without unplugging my "monitor." Fortunately, I was able to find a kneeling position that didn't force me to cramp my diaphragm.

After recording the main track, my Dad taught me the background vocals (because, of course, I never notice those kind of details on my own), and we did several takes. Then, he played around with the mixing for a few weeks, and added some background takes of his own, and I got this in my inbox earlier this week. My Dad is so cool!

PS - Luna is in the "hospital" today. Apparently, another cat in the neighborhood bit her (the vet says probably 5 days ago). This morning I found her licking a big, oozing abscess on her hindquarters. So, right now she's still waking up from the anesthetic, and I'll go pick her up in a couple more hours. :(

PPS - I finally received the remainder all of my plants orders for this year, so today and tomorrow is planting day.

Pretend to Be Nice

I don't have to work today. I think it's because a large portion of New York celebrates Rosh Hashanah. Anyway, I will preface this post with an excerpt from G.K. Chesterson's Orthodoxy:

"All the towering materialism which dominates the modern mind rests ultimately upon one assumption; a false assumption. It is supposed that if a thing goes on repeating itself it is probably dead; a piece of clockwork. People feel that if the universe was personal it would vary; if the sun were alive it would dance. This is a fallacy even in relation to known fact. For the variation in human affairs is generally brought into them, not by life, but by death; by the dying down or breaking off of their strength or desire. A man varies his movements because of some slight element of failure or fatigue. He gets into an omnibus because he is tired of walking; or he walks because he is tired of sitting still. But if his life and joy were so gigantic that he never tired of going to Islington, he might go to Islington as regularly as the Thames goes to Sheerness. The very speed and ecstasy of his life would have the stillness of death. The sun rises every morning. I do not rise every morning; but the variation is due not to my activity, but to my inaction. Now, to put the matter in a popular phrase, it might be true that the sun rises regularly because he never gets tired of rising. His routine might be due, not to a lifelessness, but to a rush of life. The thing I mean can be seen, for instance, in children, when they find some game or joke that they specially enjoy. A child kicks his legs rhythmically through excess, not absence, of life. Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, "Do it again"; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, "Do it again" to the sun; and every evening, "Do it again" to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we. The repetition in Nature may not be a mere recurrence; it may be a theatrical ENCORE. Heaven may ENCORE the bird who laid an egg. If the human being conceives and brings forth a human child instead of bringing forth a fish, or a bat, or a griffin, the reason may not be that we are fixed in an animal fate without life or purpose. It may be that our little tragedy has touched the gods, that they admire it from their starry galleries, and that at the end of every human drama man is called again and again before the curtain. Repetition may go on for millions of years, by mere choice, and at any instant it may stop. Man may stand on the earth generation after generation, and yet each birth be his positively last appearance."

Anyway, here's yet another instance of my current pre-occupation:

Some Favorite Sixpence Lyrics from "Divine Discontent"

I bought this album a while back on half.com for $0.75. What a steal.

I dreamt of something last night in my sleep;
I saw you sitting in a room without me;
You were smiling and you had a tattoo;
Of me, in a room without you.

Your mystery is not worth being solved.

another a song, three minutes long
i just need something to do

she fell in shock, the baby kicked, and shed a tear inside the womb

eyes wide open all the time
just like a drug store in the city
where she walks the streets at night
time keeps ticking like the ocean through a siv
ever on ever forward in a march
Hallelujah
she's working for the money
two for the show

But tension is to be loved
For it is like a passing note
To a beautiful, beautiful chord

So I'm changing who I am
'cos what I am's not good
And I know you love me now
But I don't see why you should

And I'm spinning unconcealed
Dizzy on this wheel, for you, my love

in all of these things you reside and I
want you to flow from the pen, bow and brush
with paper and string, and canvas tight
with ink in the air, to dust your light
From the morning 'til the black of night
This is my call, I belong to you
This is my call to sing the melodies of you
This is my call I can do nothing else
I can do nothing else

Guys & Divas

I just realized that I have a thing for movies that have guys with a thing for girls who sing.
